How wonderful it was to have a routine and to be surrounded by friendly, helpful people. Suze couldn’t believe how lucky she was to have this job. Temporary or not, it was the best thing that had happened to her in years.

Well, maybe the second-best thing. The wonderful, caring, sexy very best thing now called her each evening. She’d been too concerned about her new job to see him midweek, but today was Friday, and she was looking forward to having dinner with the man she was beginning to think she loved.

Her cell phone buzzed. Suze frowned. She was at work. Aram knew he shouldn’t call her during business hours.

“Hello?”

“Suze, darling. I have to cancel tonight’s date. I’m leaving town right away. My mother’s ill.”

“I’m so sorry to hear this.” Of course she was concerned his mother was sick. She was also very sad she wouldn’t be seeing the man of her dreams this weekend. She pinched herself. “Don’t worry about our date. You need to be with your mom. Where does she live?”

“Outside of Montreal. Small town called Hudson.”

Suze wasn’t familiar with Montreal. All she knew was it was too far away.

“She’s been taken to Lakeshore General on the West Island. She has a tricky heart that sometimes acts up, but fortunately this time her condition doesn’t sound too serious. Still, I must go.”

“Of course. And I wish your mom a speedy recovery. When you have time, though, please call me,” she said in a low voice.

“Without fail. And we’ll see each other soon.”

Suze slid her cell phone back into her handbag, which she kept under her desk. Her neatly organized, almost paper-free desk. She took pride in keeping it in spick-and-span condition.

The main phone line sounded. Suze answered it after one ring.

“Good morning, BB&M. How may I direct your call?”

“To the fucker who sold me a shitty ad campaign.”

Suze paused. This was a new one. But she was resourceful and had growing confidence in her receptionist’s skills. She’d learned quickly that while technology may have changed, charm and intelligence never went out of style.

“Yes, sir. May I have your name and company, please?”

“Yeah. George McFurious at Going-Out-Of-Fucking-Business, Incorporated. All due to BB&M’s sloppy approach to my account.”

“Oh, sir. Please let me help. I need your name and company. I’m sure we can set things straight.”

One beat. Two. Then, “Listen, lady, you seem nice. I’m sorry to be such a jerk. My name’s George Rogers and my rep’s name is, let’s see, Gord. He’s ignored all my emails. I’m bleeding money here. Can you get hold of him for me?”

“I can do better than that, Mr. Rogers. I’ll put you through to the Branch Manager, Jannie Morris. She’ll move mountains for you. I guarantee it.”

“Thanks. You’re the first person at your crazy, mixed-up company who hasn’t given me the runaround.”

“It’s my pleasure, Mr. Rogers.” Suze transferred him to Jannie.

Later that day, Gord headed past Suze’s station. He had his coat on, and he carried a box. Suze shrugged. Mr. George Rogers had truly been fed up.
